ANZAC DAY

RETURNED SOLDIERS’ OPINIONS AS TO OBSERVANCE.

Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, May 27

A discussion with reference to Anzae Day took place at the Returned Soldiers’ Conference. The Wellington association sent in a remit: "That tho Government be urged to declare Anzac Day a statutory holiday, and that the day be one of commemoration for those of our comrades who gave up their lives during the great war.” A remit from the Oamaru association also recommended that April 25th he declared a. statutory holiday for all time. The mover agreed to alter the words in the remit, "That' the Government be urged,” to "that it be a demand of the Government.”

Several speakers expressed the hope that Anzac Day would be always regarded not only as a holiday, but as a holy day. Incidentally the chairman remarked -that Hf-. New Zealand had been closer" fo the - war. there would have been not nearly so much of "that damnable spirit of profiteering.” The remits were carried in silence, delegates standing. The general opinion of the conference was that Anzac Day should also be observed as a close holiday, and that all business places, theatres, and hotels bo closed.
