RAILWAYMEN’S PROTEST
THE LONGTON APPEAL CASE. ’ At a mass meeting of the members of the Wellington branch of the A.S.R.S., the following resolution was carried: “The members of the Wellington branch of the A.S.R.S. strongly resent the autocratic decision of the Minister for Railway's in using the power of veto against the unanimous decision of the Railway Appeal Board, who decided in favour of the appellant, A. F. Longton, booking clerk, Lambton. This decision of the Minister against the unanimous decision of the board practically annuls the use of the said hoard, with the power of veto now exercised.’’ The following resolution was also carried:—“The members of the Wellington branch of the A.S.R.S. strongly protest against the National Government depriving Mr P. Webb and others of their political and civil rights.’’ A special meeting of the Paekakariki branch of the A.S.R.S. was held on Sunday to hear Mr M, Leej who was, until recently, a member of tho executive council, but who -was removed from office on account of his actions in connection with the recent negotiations between the society, the Minister, and the General Manager of Railways. Alter hearing Mr Lee’s explanation, the following resolution was carried unanimously:—“That this branch heartily supports Mr Lee and thanks him for his able address, ’*
The following resolutions were disc carried:—“That this branch support the E.F.C.A. in their efforts to secure justice from the Government; that this brancli enter an emphatic protest agamdt the Minisier’s veto in the Longton case, more especially as the Appeal Board were so unanimous in their decision.’’
