INFLUENZA
FEWER CASES NOTIFIED
POSITION IMPROVING STEADILY
The number of influenza cases notified within the Dominion from May 22nd to 27th, stated the Minister for Public Health, yesterday, was eighteen. There was one case only—a fatal case at Otorohanga—in the Auckland health district; eleven cases, all mild, in the Wellington health distinct; five in the Canterbury district—one pneumonic and the others mild; and one mild case in Otago. ' . The position, added the Minister, appeared to he improving steadily, and it certainly looked as if the danger of a recrudescence of the epidemic had disappeared.
STRANDED NEW ZEALANDERS. The chief trouble now to bo considered is in connection with the New Zealanders in Australia. A cable has been received from the chairman of the Sydney meeting held on Saturday last, and they are demanding what the Minister considers is impossible under the present conditions—namely, that, when the embargo is lifted, a full ship of passengers shall ho permitted to come here. This matter was fully considered by the Board of Health, and, after a very close investigation of the position, it recommended that a minimum of thirty, and not more than 50, passengers should bo allowed in each ship, and that, these should be subjected to the closest inspection before embarking. CASE ON MANUKA.
The Manuka is now on her way from Sydney to Wellington, and it has been reported that before leaving an influenza case was removed from the ship.
