LOYALISTS TO ‘RESUME V, WORK
SERIOUS CONFLICT ANTICIPATED.

Arrangements have been completed for the royalists to. resume..work on the wharves to-day, and a serious conflict with the strikers’is' anticipated.

SYDNEY, May 26,
Both sides to the shipping dispute are awaiting the result of the compulsory comerence, but no decision is expected to-day. The Trades Hall officials anticipate *an -early settlement as the decision to--strike is not unauimouse. The majority of the men will welcome an early resumption. Prices of foodstuifs are soaring.
COAL SHORTAGE VERY-SERIOUS,
SYDNEY. May 26. Unless a quick settlement is reached, tho coal position in all the. Austfaiian ports, and elsewhere, will be "very serious, Already, tho shortage ia being severely felt, and by the middle of next week, failing relief; it must sult in the closing of many inuiistries, and in thousands of employees being idle. (Received May 27, 12.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, May 26. The compulsory conference on the shipping dispute adjourned till Thursday. An amicable feeling prevailed, and it is confidently anticipated that an early settlement will result. BROKEN HILL STRIKE MINERS’ DEMAND REFUSED. SYDNEY, May 26. The Broken Hill mine managers tet' fused the miners’ demands, but will later review the rates of wages in the light of tho cost of living.
