AUSTRIA AND GERMANY
AMALGAMATION IMPOSSIBLE.
Australian and N.Z. Cable Association, PARIS, May IS (delayed).
Herr Renner (chief of the Austrian Peace Delegation) in an interview at Basle, while en route to Paris, said he would advance a programme embracing the union of Austria and Germany.
The “Daily Telegraph’s’’ correspondent at Paris says: It ■is recognised here that tho incorporation of Austria with the German republic would entirely alter tho balance of power with, in the German borders, and largely neutralise the present preponderance of Prussia, but under the existing settlement with Germany, incorporation will bo impossible. Tho Treaty demands that Germany must recognise Austrian independence until the League ennc J ' tions a change, which cannot be made unless the Council of the League is unanimous. It is inconceivable that Italy will consent.
