_ Press, Association. • DARGAVILLE, : May 26. ijaite & commotion was caused in shipping circles this morning, when a report was spread that the watorsiders , loading the Sydney steamer Ihumata had struck. Colour was given to the report, when the men .in a body were seen making for the International . Hall, where a union meeting was held. Inquiries showed that matters were not quite so serious as painted by rumour. A stop-work meeting was being held for the purpose of taking a secret " balloit arising out of a conference of recent seamen and shipowners concerning a further rise in wages, and the other trouble was in connection with overtime to be worked loading the steamer. The men opposed working later than o o’clock. Captain Mathieson took exception to this attitude, and a conference was then arranged to discuss the situation. The matter was refei red to Air C. Davidson, ’ secretary of . the local branch of the Watorsiders’ Union, Captain Mathieson and Mayor R. E. Hornblow. These gentlemen went

fully into the grievances of the parties. The Mayor addressed the men, and a . further meeting of the union was held, when everything was settled satisfactorily, and tho men decided to work overtime.
