He moved that tho Gear : Company be asked to remove the wooden chutes that carry matter from the works into the harbour. He was aware that the cbmpany did all that was possible to prevent a nuisance, but it could not be carried out effectually under the present conditions. The Mayor said he could not accept a motion on the lines submitted. The question required careful consideration and it should be brought forward by a

notice of motion. " I This was agreed to and the question > is to be discussed at Abe next meeting of the council.

The owner of a property in Union street, the house on which had been condemned by the health authorities, asked to be given lime to make the premises fit for habitation. Councillor Brocklebank said that the house in question was old and not fit for residential purposes thirty years ago. It was. decided not to grant ihe application. Another owner, who was not a resident of the district, was given seven days to carry out repairs to premises otherwise action is to be taken. The Gisborne Borough Council asked tor support of a remit which it was forwarding to the municipal conference in regard to advocating that the names on the electoral roj.l be transferred to the municipal roll in order.to save contusion ‘and expense. It was resolved to extend tho support applied for. ' The agents for Newcastle and Maitland coal informed the council of a rise of 3* per ton, due, it was stated, to the rise in freights and the cost of production. In regard to the taking over of the local band Councillor Tovey, the chairman of the committee set up to go into the question, reported that the band would require a new set of instruments costing from XASO to X 650. and a low estimate of the upkeep would be dJIOO per annum. In view of the heavy cost the committee recommended the council not to take over the band for the present. Tho Mayor said there was no reason why Petone should not have an efficient band and ..he,, thought it was a matter the citizens should interest themselves in as a whole. The ’bus committee made a report on tho state of the borough 'bus service, and Councillor Hay moved that the report bo discussed in committee.
