INSTITUTE OF HORTICULTURE
SUGGESTION Bif WELL-KNOWN N ÜBS'iiE.YSiAN.
Mr C. J. Parr. M.P.. C.M.G., in his paper at the Town-Planning Conference on "lteserves. Parks and Open Spaces," referred to the fact that as town planum progressed the need for competent landscape supervision would be largely increased. ' A "Times" reporter interviewed Mr Geo. A. Green, secretary of the Nurserymen's Association, to ascertain what facilities were now available for giving practical and theoretical traning in nurserv work, horticulture, landscape, architecture and kindrew subjects in the Dominion. KiPracticallv none," was Mr Green's reply. "Nor will our profession take its proper place in this country until the Government recognises tho absolute necessity 'of up-to-date facilities being civen for the best education for our youths who contemplate taking up the profession of horticulture. This can only be attained by an Institute of • Hovti: culture connected with our secondary schools and the University. In connection with an Institute-of" Horticulture travelling lectureships should 1 be estab lished which would- at -comparatively small cost place the very, best theoretical and practical horticultural education at tho disposal of tho lisinß generation; When such an institute is established the ultimate results will be to produce a generation-, of horticultural experts, whoso knowledge aud standing will be equal to tho. best in the world. Only when we seonro n; National Institute, of Horticulture whose eraduates shall direot the horticulture side of our future townplanning shall we attain approximately to the highest ideals that our pioneers in the city and-country beautiful have set before the .public of New Zealand. Tho town-plannine conference should .-undoubtedly stimulate an interest in the pressing need for special facilities for higher' education in horticultural subjects." , " ' ' ' .' •
