ECONOMISING WAR FUNDS.
WELLINGTON WAR RELIEF ASSOCIATION.
AND THE TRENTHAM SCHOLAR
SHIPS SCHEME
In conversation with a Frees representative, a member of the executive mated tho other day that a new scheme had been launched uy the Trentham, Scholarships Art Union Committee. This scheme -is to secure donations from wealthy societies and individuals lor the purpose of educating a number of children and establishing them in professions. The cost is riot to exceed £IOOO for each child, and tho children's fees, board, and all living expenses are to be paidy right up to the completion of their studies. liecently an appeal was mado to the Wellington War Kolief Association, which has in hand at present funds amounting to over £70,000. It was suggested that • a .sum not exceeding £3OOO from this fund should be donatedi" making this association responsible for the complete education ot three children, of soldiers. When this proposal came before tho association committee, objection was raised to donating money to such a cause, as there might be. more imperative need' for .soma..other,..purpose later. It is regarded as being strange tbat wjhen a splendid scheme like tlie Trenthan. Scholarship Fund calls foi assistance there should bo hesitation in allowing a small proportion of the very considerable moneys in tho hands of .the .association to bo.applied. Tho cash was subscribed by a generous public long ago, to.bo expended during and tho war npon soldiers -and their dependents. "Surely it is time," said the committeemen, "that some of this money was disbursed, and if applied to the scholarships scheme' the soldier's widow, his children, and tho State generally will he definitely benefited. If other and more serious needs should arise later, then, surely, it 'will bo possible to raise funds to nieet these needs. If the public" of this country find in the course of the coming menths or years that tho money they havo subscribed is insufficient to do the just thing hy New Zealand's soldiers and their dependents, then the public will not 6e backward in providing moro money for such purposes. With a definite find splendid object awaiting support, it seems unnecessary to hold the pursestrings so very tightly on account of prohlematioall future contingencies.''
