INDIA'S STATUS
t POSITION IN LEAGUE OF NATIONS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received Mav 25, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, May 23. In presenting tho Indian Budget in the House of Commons, Mr E. S. Montagu (Secretary of State for India) foreshadowed tho Reform Bill in June. Ho'pointed out that India was an original member of tho League of Nations, and such membership was only justifiable if India was' raised to the position of a sister nation of tho Empire and was wholly inconsistent with India's present subordination. Mr Montagu added: "I say to our colleagues representing tho great Dominions that this position of India's equality in tho League is wholly inconsistent with the treatment of India's citizens in the British Dominions, which puts them lower than citizens of other parts of our Empire."
