Bevan has passed the Board of Trade examination for a foreign-going second .officer's certificate. /'Shipping men at Melbourne spoke" appreciatively of the navigating ability of Captain W. T. Liley. of the Port Phillip Pilots" Association. who successfully brought toe 13.000 ton liner Balmoral Castle, which is 600 ft lons, up the Yarra and to her allotted berth on the western basin at Victoria dock,on April 24th. Her great length rendered the task of following the winding stream and negotiating, the rather narrow entrance to the dock ■ basin more formidable • than .that .of piloting a steamer of'greater tobnage. The Katoa had up to quite recently been engaged in the Pacific coast-Australasian cargo trade,, and this is her first visit to this port for several vears past. From Dunedin the Katoa will go to Timaru to piit out the balance of her freight, after which sho will load produce at the latter port and Lyttelton for Auckland. PORT SYDNEY SAILS TO-DAY. The C. and D. liner Port Sydney, with passengers and cargo, is to leave Wel J lington at daybreak to-day for London via Panama. BARENSZ AT AUCKLAND. -•The Dutch nacke/t steamer , Barensz finished discharging her consignment of [ Sugar at Chelsea. Auckland, on Wednesday night, and berthed at the Queen's wharf on Thursdav morning. This -vessel was. built at Amsterdam in 1915 for the Dutch East Indies trade. 'She is very spacious, and has comfortable_ passenger accommodation. She ■ carries a crew of 92 all told, about 70 of whom are Japanese. •• Her departure from Auckland for Melbourne has been fixed for to-dar. ARMAGH LOADS FOR HOME. The Union Company's new steamei Armagh is to leave Sydney on June 12th for Wellington, in order to load in New Zealand fqr London under the auspices of the New Zealand Shipping Company. The Armagh is a four-geared turbine vessel of 12.269 tons gross, built in October 1917. Her principal dimensions 39ft 9in. MOKOIA FROM AUCKLAND. The Union Company advises that the Mokoia is to leave Auckland on Monday direct for Wellington, omitting the usual rails at Gisborne and Napier. The vessel will arrive here on Wednesday and is to proceed to Lyttelton and Dunedin. . MAORI SHORT-STAFFED. " As the Maori was three firemen short of her complement on the run -n- from T.vttelton vesterdav, sho used onlv twothirds of her boiler power, and oonpequently was about two hours late in irriving at Wellington. As no other fireman were procurable here the Maori willed again last night with only twothirds boiler power. . _ ' WESTRALIA LAID XJT. The Wellington office of the Huddarr Parker Company has received cable advice that the Westralia's crow, owing to the seamen's strike in Australia, left the vessel at Melbourne, and she is laid up at that port. It is presumed that the Riverina is held -up at Sydney owing to the same cause. WORK AT THE SLIP. The Nikau was relaunched from the rmtent slip at 3 p.m. vesterdav. The tug Terawhiti will 'go up oh the oradln on Monday morning for cleaning and nainting. She will be brought off oli Tuesday morning.
