On April 28th, accused had beengivep notice to leave on account of his position'having been filled.by a. returned soldier. On Mayilgijh >( i,ac<!,used samp,. 7 into his (witness's) office,, say/ng he* wias going to the"general'manager to confess of having stolen money, "witness asked him how much he had taken, and accused replied it amounted to about £3OO. He then left the room. The general manager came into witness's room shortly after, and while they were discussing the matter accused came in, and handed in a paper with a list ot the amounts (produced). The list exception, the amounts 'mentioned 03 witnesses in court.

To Mr Cunningham (who. appeared for accused): The had no knowledge of the defalcations until accused confessed them. Accused's conduct and ivork previously had been considered good. Mr Cunningham: How was it that the' amounts were-not: checked?. •; Witness: The hook should be takenround with the money to, the cashier.Mr Cunningham: Unless under the system existing a man confessed, how could things of this kind be found out? . . ■ " Witness: -As soon as the vessel sailed it would be discovered, as it. is then checked.

Accused pleaded guilty to _ defalcations amounting to £240, consisting of amounts paid in by various customers. He -was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
