CHARITABLE AID
AN ALL-ROUND INCREASE.
, The following report, which was presented to tho Hospital Board at its monthly meeting yesterday by tho charitable aid committee, shows that there has been an all-round increase in the dispensation of charitable aid. The volume of charitable aid in tho city showed an upward tendency during tho month. Seventeen now applications were received, while eight cases terminated, leaving a not increase of nine over tho preceding month. The daily average number of persons receiving assistance was 222 as against 205. Tho appended comparative table will serve to indicate the largo general increase over preceding years, both in numbers and expenditure. Tho numbers are increased* through the accretion of cases caused by the November epidemic, but not coming within tho scope of the Government scheme of financial assistance, while tho increase in expenditure is indicative of the general raising of tho standard of assistance which was inevitable as sympathetic reflex from the standard of epidemic relief, based as tile latter is upon the greatly-enhanced cost of existence, and upon other more profound social-economic considerations. The following comparative table was added:— 1919. '9lB. IDI7. Total number of cases assisted 71 41 58 Daily average number of persona in receipt of relief 293 117 163 Total rations (fronted 552 412 175 A £ A Cash grants 289 31 28 Direct maintenance of children 67 26 17
