COALITION WINS THE STEEPLES. MARQUETEUR SUCCESSFUL IN THE CONNOLLY HANDICAP. (From Our Special' Reporter.) WANGANUI, May TZ. The Wanganui Jockey Club commenced its winter meeting under ideal circumstances to-day. There were some severe defections, hut the sport provided was quite good. During the running of the Wanganui Steeplechase Yellow and Black fell and had to bo carted off the course. He appeared to be in a bad way. _ Master. Strowan made a gallant effort in the Steeples, but his weight told against him in the end. Euripos won the Century Hurdles in masterly, fashion, and if started at Auckland should be hard to beat. Marqneteur, who has been running successfully of late, accounted for h’.s field in the Connolly Handicap in good style. During the day the machine handled £39,829, compared with £35,133 for the first day last year. Results:— BOROUGH HANDICAP. Of 350 sovs; sis furlongs. I-—J.
