(To the Editor “Poultry Notes.’' "N.Z. Times.") . Sir.—Mr Scott's reply to- ■my brief criticism ..of egg-laying competitions leaves things very much as I . claimed them to 1 be. viz., that there is much room for improvement. It as not proper that officers such as the - president, secretarv and committeemen, : who are also keen- poultry breeders, should . be free to . enter pens as they do at present. I will readily admit that, in my statement about ''entire personal freedom' 1 I might have exceeded what would be a fair statement of the actual position as applying to Papanui and to Auciaand, but even if wo admit that the personal freedom is limited, as we. take it, to officers. and limited in extent, the gist of mv criticism "rests upon a quite sound foundation nevertheless; It is not hinted -chat officers would' surrfeptititiously substract a Pocketful of "wonder chick '■ eggs from a nest through a crack in thewall. or place eggs in a neat unobserved by the caretaker, but dhat'in the interests of the institution It'ds 1 essential that things be so arranged as to inspire the fullest confidence in all concerned. -■ Tt should-not .he necessary to-point out to Mr Scott , that the .average competitor realises that rivalry between breeders is pretty-keen, and, sometimes even merciless: ..that, .passion. . rules high .ih close contests: that agJbitioQ'. is no .mean force, and that' human nature is human, nature ef-efywhere;' ’“These officers ■■ of competitors have'the personal influence that attaches to -their officership, and their birds, on the spot. The distant competitors have-nothingtebalance that. With regard ..to the Auckland contest, particularly take Mr Scott himself. He is a breeder of the famous wonder duck and variolic ;,tner breeds, and is also president of. the competition. For years he has criticised the southern competition for" its imperfections.' These southerners were the limit. Wait till Auckland has its own • competitions, it shall be perfect!' ' Auckland at last had its wish, and officers- enter pens; there: as" down south. Mr Soott. I understand, had no less than four competing pens entered last year. X will give Mr Scottfull credit for the extent .of his-efforts in organisation! bub we are here discussing the propriety or otherwise of certain linos ofTactibn 'in what may be called .important institutions for the advancement of' the poultry industry.
