REDUCTIONS IN FREIGHTS. In explanation of iecent reductions in freight rates, on cargo from India fer Australia, it has been reported that the concessions made were attributable to a gradual release of tonnage for purely civil commercial purposes, and the lessened strain of the war. At the same time there did not appear in England or in India any suggestion of imminent finality to the downward* movement in freight charges,. although it was reported from Calcutta that in the Eastern and Australian trades the schedule .as amended was to' hold good for six monlilis'. That, it waa hoped, would induce shipper* ta enter into enghgo-

meats to fill exports from India without any deterrent on account of pfospoofive further fluctuations in freights. That hope (says tho Melbourne “Age") was rather dashed by a later intimation from the President of the British Board of Trade that a considerable slump in shipping rates was a not .unlikely event, that expectation being based upon a belief that in the summer months of this year there Would be at least as much world tonnage afloat as there was before the war. A not nnnatural sequel to this official forecast it stated to be a disposition on the part of shippers to await further concessions in freight rates for goods for Australia.
