NOTES AND COMMENTS (By. “Tohunga.”) Th© Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting commences to-day and good fields numerically are the order. Thirteen sprinters have been accepted for in the Borough Handicap, of six furlongs. Inah with 8.1 must have a good chance of success. She ran well at the Egmont meeting and should acquit herself well , to-day. The horse most likely to trouble her is Birkenvaie. Demos is another who must have a chance of success.
There are only sis acceptors for the Hack Steeplechase. Polthogue heads the list of a very poor field -with 11.2, and he should cover the two miles in better time than any of the others. Master Webster, who won the Hack Steeples on the second day at Hawera, must run a good race. The Kaitoke Hack Hurdles, of a mile and three-quarters, has drawn « field of nine, Euripos heading the list with 11/13. The Hymettus gelding may be reserved for the Century Hurdles, in which case Royal Park should ha hard to heat. Gunwale should have a chance.
The Connolly Handicap has* a field of nine. Rewi Poto heads the list with 9.4. He is a good middle-distance horse, and providing he gets away with the rest of the field he should be very bard to heat. Marqueteur with 7.2 appears to be well situated, and ho has form to his credit. Tressida 7,7 may find a place.
There are eleven engaged in the Puxna Handicap, of a mile and 110 yards, the top weight being Cadet with 8.8. Astinomo with 7.12 will probably be the hardest horse to beat. ’Cello may find his way into second place.
The Wanganui Steeplechase has filled up with seven. Master* Strowan heading the list with 12.9, Coalition being 231 b below him. Arlington has 10.10 and Bore 10.9. Yellow and Black will find a lot of difficulty in getting over the three miles. At the end of the two miles that will be run out by Arlington, \ellow and Black will probably meet his Waterloo. Coalition should be one of the hardest horses to beat at the end of the three miles, and Bore and Master Strowan should fill the places.
Tli ere are only seven acceptors for the Century Hurdles, a race which has always drawn large fields in the past. Paraba has pride of place with 11.1. giving Euripos six pounds. If the latter is started in this race instead of the Kaitoke Hurdles that should be the end of it. Whiro and Munster have recent form to recommend them, and altogether despite the short field the race should ho a good one. '
