MONTHLY SITTING. Mr F. V. Frazer, S.M., presided ever the monthly court at Petone yesterday. Patrick Carlton McGill appeared on remand for the third time.charged with the theft of a bag valued at 30s and the sum of .£ls in cash from Mary Isherwood at Petone on May sth last. Mr P. W. Jackson appeared oh behalf of the accused, and Sergeant . Bird prosecuted. Sergeant Bird stated that he had been notified just before the court commenced that the main witness was ill and had pone to Eotorua. He would ask. therefore, for a remand for a week. The application was granted, hail being allowed in one surety of .£IOO and another ol <esa / TT. TTf+h. a reservist, was charged with failing to carol in the Expeditionary Force Reserve. As his solicitor was engaged at the Wellington. Magistrate's Court, an adjournment was granted. Mary Johnston appeared to answer a charge of breaking her prohibition order, Mr P. W. Jaokwm appearing on her behalf. Sergeant Bird stated that she had given the police a lot of trouble lately. A flask of gin (produced) was found under the babies’ blankets in her pram, Mr Jackson said that,he understood that his client had purchased the gin for medicinal purposes, and not as a beverage. (Laughter.) "I wish to congratulate the police on their' alertness in discovering the bottle of gin in the pram,” said Mi Jackson. A fine of Jsl and costs was inflicted.

Bruce Baldwin Clutterbuck was charged with failing to attend the parades of the D Company sth Regiment. Sergeant Bird said that Clutterbuck had been fined on two other occasions for similar offences, the sum of .£5 being still unpaid. Accused would not even attend the court. Sergeant-Major Bowker stated that defendant was a source of trouble to the Defence people in Petone, and despite all manner of persuasion he failed to attend a single parade of the company. Captain Davies also gave evidence and said that Clutterbuck lived only a couple of hundred yards fro mthe barracks. He was an antifmilitarist. .The magistrate said he could do nothing, except treat him as a persistent objector. He would be fined J!5 and costs.

Frederick Wilson, inspector of factories, Wellington, proceeded against J. Symonds and Son, bakers, Petone, for employing a boy named William Calvert without bolding a certificate of fitness, and also for allowing Calvert to commence duties prior to a quarter to eight in the morning. The father of the hoy, George M. Calvert, was also charged with allowing his son to work before 7.45 a.m. Mr Wilson, the inspector, said he c.id not press for a heavy fine in connection with any of the charges; he only wished to make an example for the benefit of other employers. Hr Frazer said that the whole thing was a loose arrangement, and was not a formal engagement. Symonds was convicted and fined £1 and costs cn the first information, and convicted and •rderco to pav costs only on the second information. The father of the boy was convicted and discharged. For allowing cattle to wander, Peter Sharpe was fined J 35 and 23s Gd costs; Joseph William Reedy, 10s and 7s costs: and Albert Charles Wright, 10s and 27s Gd costs. '

Driving along the Hutt road at a speed of 21 miles an hour cost Charles Bidwell JBI 10s and costs

For putting refuse in a drain, John Burn was fined Is and J9s Gd costs. W. R. McLeod was granted possession of a tenement from Thomas Rae, the warrant not to be issued before three weeks.
