NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By Tohunga.) The North Otago Jockey Club commences' its winter meeting to-morrow, The fields are very fair though the Wanganui meeting has taken some ot the good cross-country horses away. The first race. th» .Empire Hurdles, has an acceptance of seven. If Tip Up clears the fences that should be tho end of it. He has the pace so long as he can negotiate the obatacies. There are ten engaged in the Triai Plate, all carrying 8.7. It is an open thins with a lot of young stuff, but Barrage may win in the end. Mortham appears to be a most versatile performer. He wins over the distance and he Tuns well in the sprints. He heads tho list in the Electric Handicap, but his weight might stop him. Radial with 8.4 appears to be a much better proposition than Mortham. Another horse with a winning chance is Leaping Burn. Kilbronev is represented by KilUne.T,

Eight horses are engaged in tho Oamara Cup of one mile. John Barleycorn topping the scale with 8.13. Eleus and IndU3 may be better horses on the dav over the distance. Caverock may not see the distaace out. but Marianneis a possiMe place-gette*. Lady Superior has S.B in the Railway Handicap for "which there are seven 'runners. She would perform as well as, if ' not better than, most of the others, ; the best of whom may prove to be CatI taoh.

If Leaping Burn starts in the Fernbrook Welter instead of the Electric Handicap he stiould be a hard proposition as the ftelo i« not a particularly strong one. Kilkee. with but 8.8 to carry, must have a chance. Kilbrogan iheads the list in the Stewards' Handicap of sis furlongs with 10.5. Gcod as he is that weight might stop him. Braid appears to be a better proposition with 7.11. and Redshire with 8.3 should not be the last to finish.
