CHRISTOHUBOH, May 19. Replying to a deputation of dele« gates of Canterbury public bodies at Arthur's Pass on Saturday urging him to use his endeavours for the expedition of work in the Otira Tunnel, the Hon. W. D. S. MacDonald, who has just completed a .tour of the Weat Coast, gave a very sympathetic answer. He had been greatly impressed with the possibilities' of Westland, both in regard to agricultural and pastoral pursuits and the mining industry, and he said that the linking up of Canterbury with Westland by railway would add materially to the progress of the provinces. Personally, considering the amount of expenditure which was earning practically no interest in connection with tunnel work, he did not think any other work was so important to complete. The Auckland lines were very important, especially the connection with Napier, but none was mor# important than the Midland Railway.
