Mr W. Plowman, who was a member of the Napier Borough Council for over twenty years, was accorded a 'hearty vote of thanks for his past services at a meeting of the council a few days ago.

Mr A. E. Greenslade, Mayor of Northcote, has been appointed the council's delegate to the Town-plan. 7 ning Conference, which takes place. this week in Wellington, .and Mr W. IS. Richavrdson was appointed DeputyMayor during Mr Greenslade's absence.
- Second-Lieutenant G. Vernon Woodjs is returning to New.- Zealand by the Pakeha, due in Wellington about May 27th. He left with the 6th Rainforcement, and after service on Gallipoli he obtained his commission at Worcester College, Oxford. In Franca he was awarded, the Croix de Guerre, and was personally decorated by King Albert of Belgium. ' ■ '
Mr Thomas Walker, one of Levin's oldest settlers, died on Friday evening, aged sixty-six years. Deceased' spent the earlier part of his life in Wanganui and New Plymouth; bat later took, charge of the State farm at Levin. Messrs Reginald and Aubrey Walker are sons of deceased, and Mesdames Kendall (Wanganui), Obaanings (Levin), Vowell (Wellington), and Miss Walker (Levin) daughters.
Mr Edward .Eagle, a well-known resident of Carterton for many years, and one of the pioneer settlers of Wellington, died a few days ago, at t* 1 ■ ■ age -of seventy-nine. In his days "the late Air Jvagle was. a - engineer, and was chief in * 4 Wellington's well-known old sU notably the Stormbird- Later h'tJ "'-' „ associated with the late- Mr William Booth in. the" sawmilling business.

Tho Mayor of Ohristchurch (Dr. Thacker, M.P.) and Councillors Williams and. Sullivan, Mr ff. R. Smitn (town clerk), Mr A. Dudley Dobsou (city surveyor), representing Christchurch City Council, and Messrs B. Holland arid J 5. R. Climie, representing the Canterbury Progress League, left for Wellington last night to attend the Dominion- Town-planning" Conference (states a Press Association message from Chrisrehureh).
Dr Diamond Jenness, son of Mr G. Jenness, of Lower Hutt, is about to return home for a brief „stay before resuming work with the Caildian Government. From an English University he went to study anthropology among the wildest tribes of the Pacific Islands, then he went to the Arctic with Stefansson to study the Eskimos. On returning to civilisation he enlisted in the Canadian Army as a private, and is now under engagement to the Canadian Government to write up his experiences. ... .
• One of Auckland's very early oolo? uists, -Air John Batger, died last Friday. Barn in London in 1838, Mr Batger left England by the Joseph Fletcher, and landed in, Auckland on August 31st, 1%52. He was a director of the Soafch British Insurance Company for many years.. He always took a great interest in church matters, and for mauy years was a member of the Diocesan Trust' Board, tho Synod, and various other church organisations. Ho married the eldest daughter of Mr David Archibald, ono of Auckland's early settlers, and is survived by three sons, two daughters, and seven grandchildren.
