SATURDAY S CASES.
Mr D. G. A. Cooper. S.M., presided over Saturday's sitting of the Magistrate’s Court. , „ -n Ernest AAadms. Herbert P. Pettit, Step-ocu Fisher, John .Ferry, Percy Aibel t Olding. and Ernest Beech were each charged with stealing 1301 b of ham, 2001 b v: bacon. 2361 b of cheese. 72. b of butter, a case of condensed milk, a case ot ■frozen eggs, a case of frozen clucks, five cases of bloaters, and three _cases ot kippers, of a total value of -£<3 4s, the property .of tho Sh&w, buvill nnd Albion CCompany. Acting sub-inspector Emerson said the accused were members ot tho crew of the Raranga and the goods were alleged to have’ been taken from the cargo at 4 o’clock that morning. As the polic© were not prepared to go on with the case bo asked for and was granted a remand until this morning. Martin Hogan, pantryman on the Northumberland, when charged with the theft of baxing gloves and a puucnmg ball, valued at £O, the property of the Y M.C.AA.. stated that some of the articles had .been given to him by a soldier and ho had found the other on the deck of tho ship in a pillow case. Lho goods were in a locker on tho ship nnd the gloves had been presented to tho Y M.CA. bv the War Contingent Association for the use of soldiers who returned to Now Zealand bv the Northumberland. On investigation tho locker was discovered to have been broken open. Hogan was convicted end fined £2, in default to be imprisoned for -seven.days. On a charge of stealing 9000 si garottes from the troopship Northumberland. John Williams was convicted and sentenced to three months in tail. The cigarettes were valued at £lO 7s.
