RETURNED SOLDIER’S SUICIDE
HANGS HIMSELF WITH A SHEET

PALMERSTON N.. May 10. A returned soldier named Private Arthur Robert Gardner committed suicide by hanging himself with a sheet from a fire escape at thd Occidental Hotel to-night. Deceased was seen at 6 o’clock, and appeared in his usual state of health. Ho went upstairs, and at 8.30 was found dead. Ho had thrown himself over the side of tho hotel, his neck being broken. Gardner, who was 20 years of ago, returned on February 28th, aftr active service with tho Auckland Infantry. A month later ho was discharged on account of his wounds. His mother resides at Olmtu, Taihape, and among tho papers on tho body was a letter imploring deceased to leave town and come home,, as she did not want him to got into bad company. Deceased complained lately of terrible pains in the head.
