Sir William Williams- Director-Gon---eral of the.Commoawealth».Medical Ser-« vices, whose death was announced this, week, was horu at Sydney in 1853, being the son of Dr. W. J. Williams, of, that city. He was surgeon-major and principal medical officer with the New South Wales Contingent in the Soudan, campaign in 1885-86 colonel and principal medical officer with the Austro-. Han and New Zealand forces in the South African War. He was later ap-., pointed Director-General of the Commonwealth Military Medical Services, a position which he had held for over 15 years at .the time of his death. The death occurred at the Waikato hospital bn Tuesday evening of Mr James Ryburn, of Paterangi. The deceased, who was one of tho pioneer settlers, was born at Campbelltown, Argyleshire, on May Bth, 18.%'.
