NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL J3ROWN SHIELD CHALLENGES. j Mr H. J. Buck presided over a meeting of the council of the New Zealand Football Association last evening. Messrs JL McKeowon, T. McLaren, S. Bryco, r.nd B. L- Salmon were also present. Challenges for the Brown Shield (at present held by Canterbury) were received from Otago, Auckland, and Wellington. Usually these challenges are played in the order received, but it was pointert out that Auckland challenged last s«ason, though, too late for the match to be played. Under the special circumstances it was resolved to .playi the Auckland match first and not later than J «ne 30th, Otago.second, and Wellington third. The Canterbury . Football Association wrote stating that a man named Haynes had been suspended for two years from October 21at last for unseemly conduct, on English Park during a Brown Shield match last season. As no particulars whatever were forwarded the matter was referred back for a full report to be sent in. * , . The Excelsior Club. Christchurch, for warded an appeal against a decision of the Canterbury F.A. in a match against the Celtic Club for the. Watson Uii». The referee had awarded a free-kick it-r unintentional "hands" inside the penalty area, whereas having made a mistake he should have thrown the ball down, llie decision of the C;F.A. was against the Excelsior Club, which asked for n>o extra time to be replayed. This decsion was upheld by the council, the appeal fee to be returned to the dub. The Otago F.A. wrote advising the appointment of Mr Bryce as delegate.-, and nominating Messrs C. B. Stathain, H.P., and H. L. Godber as vice-presi-dents to the N.Z.F.A. • The Wellington F.A. appointed Mesgri> Fi Li O'Connell and J. McCrone as delegates', and nominated Messrs F. J. Courtney and A. E. Wells as vice-presidents. Capfain P. H. Hall-Thompson, replying to a request that the Auckland Football Association be allowed to use the .' dmiralty ground at Devonport, stated that as ships of war are expected in these waters very shortly, the ground will te required for Naval landing parties fairly constantly,' as well as being used Naval Tecreation parties. The request, therefore, could not bo acceded to. The secretary "was instructed to forward a ball to the headmaster, Mauriceville West School, Wairarapa,. in response to a request for same. Mr H. L. Godber, having accepted a position on the management committee of the Wellington Football Association, forwarded resignatin as a' vice-president. Mr A. E. Gibbs, the'N.Z.F.A. representative in London, replying to a lequest for referees' charts to be forwarded, stated that none, had been printed since the war began. The. council d'd not, perhaps, appreciate the position with regard to football in England; there had been.no meeting of the council of the Football Association since 1915, and- the staff of the association had been reduced to the secretary (Mr F. J. Wall). Encouraging reports were received from the Otago and Auckland Associations regarding the progress of the game in these centres. The secretary stated that-he had recently visited Auckland and found that while the management there had undoubtedly given, cause for complaint the last season or two, a great improvement would -be shown this year.
