NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "Tohunga.”) A representative of General Soult in Rae's stable, at BUerslie, is likely to make good in tli© minor jumping class later on. Tho name of Malra has been claimed for him. Mr H. E. Sellars, secretary of the Eaoing Conference, who has been seriously ill, is now well on the way to recovery* The following is tho record of Desert Gold’s performances to date:
The mare has started in 56 races, and has been three times out of a. place only. During her career she has pumpeu un against some fair, propositions in iNeaj Zealand, including IN ones, Eligible and Kilbov, and the only one to deteat her was Kilboy. Desert Gold’s earnings to date amount to A'22,574. Onco upon a time the mare was ridden by one jockey only, J. O’Shea. but last year she was piloted by six different horsemen. In the A.J.C. Spring Stakes and Craven Plata J. O’Shea rode the mare, MoLauohlan had the mount in the ibourne. Stakes, W, Foulsham in the Melbourne Cup, H. Gray in the Taranaki Stakes. Hawera Stakes, Egmont Stakes and Manawatu Stakes. , In the Easter Handicap; McElynn rode Desert Gold, and C. Emerson rede her in the Awapuni Gold Cup. H. Gray rode her in. her only wins this season. Mr G. D. Greenwood has purchased a colt bv Varco from Para way and a filly by Cooltrim from Quietest. The amounts paid wers. 350 guineas and 200 guineas respectively. Accommodation has been booked at Ellerslio for Yellow and Black for the Steeplechase meeting. A. J. Mcplynn rode five winners at the Kawakawa meeting. One of his mounts paid well over the limit. That was Pretty Ethel, who nearly distanced the field in her maiden effort. Mullingar still bleeds when working, and- when returning from his tasks there are unmistakable signs that something is wrong internally.
Complaints are made at Ellerslie regarding some person or persons Lg feed from the different boxes in the cold-and silent night. The culprit will eet a bad reception if he falls across one of the owners of the said feed; the said feed being some dear just now. The first foal by, that great performer Pommern made its appearance at the Maiden Brleigh Stud in tho early part of February. Its dam is Queen Desmond (Desmond— Beigning Queen, by Gallinule). for whom Mr A. M. Singer gave 5000 j;™ l "* l3 at auction in. 1913. Australian papers now to hand show that the Auckland-bred gelding Taram Jack'figured anions the starters for the Great Eastern Steeplechase, run at Onkaparinga (8.A.), on April 21st. The son of ■•Spalpeen, who was called upon to carry the/senere impost of 13st, jumped badly, and was never in a position to flatter the hopes of his ownef that he, would claim the attention of the judge. Recently at Kedron Park a person passed himself off. as a licensed fielder in the paddock (writes "Tty=> Harvester" In the Brisbane "Courier"), and laying a price that was something over the average odds on the horses engaged in the First Division of the Park Handicap, reaped a fine harvest, and decamped before tho race was decided. Many of the disgruntled backers sought out the manager of the club, but that official wag not able to do anything. It transpires that the person in question was not licensed by the club. He simply stood up with a bag and tickets with a false name, and got away with quite a lot of money. Though British Aroh has been allowed to drop out of the Great Northern Hurdle Bace, the idea of bringing the son of Marble Arch across to New Zealand for winter hurdle events has not been entirely dropped, and he figures in a jumping eVent later on at the Ellerslie meeting. In conversation with his owner during the week, writes "Phaeton," I gleaned that he did not see eye to ««ye with the haridicapper's estimate of we ex-Aucklander, otherwise, the owner contends, a strong effort may have been made to bring the son of Marble Arch across to Ellerslie so that he may have taken his place in the Great Northern Hurdle Bace on the 31st inst. EGMONT RACES CONCLUDING BAT'S EESTTLTS. . Press Association. HAWERA. May 15.
