Patrick Leahy, for casting offensive ' matter on the footpath in Manners street, was hned £6, in default to be imprisoned for a month.

Jimmy Gavini, a Hindu, who pleaded guilty to insobriety and the use of obscene language, was convicted and discharged on the first count, and fined £2, in default seven days, on the second.
, Daniel Hill, twenty-one years of age, pleaded guilty to receiving goods I'at Hawera valued at filT'Ts'fd;' and failing to account tor iaem''to : Bei , kej> I ley (Jarke, manufacturwrs' agent' and importer, Wellington, thereby com.' milting theft. Deteotive-bergeant Rawle said that when he interviewed ■ the,accused ho stated he had procured employment with tho object or paying back tho money. Cbief-Deteotive Boddam said Hill was a canvasser for Berkeley Clarke, and approximately £3O -worth of goods was not accounted ' for. "It was possible that an attack of influenza had had an unnerving effect on the accused for the time being, and had loosened his moral, control. The defendant would be admitted to probation, but the term would be fairly long in case he had a recurrence of influenza. HilJ was admitted to probation for tww years, and during that period is to be under the control of the probation officer. - i CIVIL OASES.
