DIPHTHERIA OUTBREAK
IN A DUNEDIN ORPHANAGE.
Press Association. DTJNEDIN, 3Tay 15. : An outbreak of diphtheria has oc-
curred in the Giendining Home Orphanage, controlled by the Presbyterian Church. There are about eighty '*
children in the home, and five are suffering from diphtheria. One patient died two days ago. A deputation to the Charitable Aid Board to-day urged immediate action. Dr Falconer, medical superintendent of the hospital, reported that practioally the whole of the reserve isolation in the ,Dunedin Hospital was being used for cases which should be accommodated in the outside infectious diseases hospital, these including twenty cases of scarlei fever in the fever, hospital and twenty cases of diphtheria in the old Nurses' Home. He suggested that the Health Department be requested to act at once. The Rev. Cameron, representing the managers of the home, said that no isolation in the Giendining Home could be satisfactory unless the healthy children were taken away. • He threatened to take the diphtheria patients to the hospital and leave them, on the board's hands if any delay occurred. Subsequently Dr Falconer inspected two buildings, but as they were unsatisfactory for isolation purposes, the Revl Cameron took the patients to the hoapital and left them there.
