PROPOSED IMPERIAL GUARD

DIFFICULTIES IN THE WAY OF ORGANISATION. | (Received May 14, 7.5 p.m.) LONDON. May 19. Discussions are proceeding iu official eircles_ regarding the desirability of establishing an Imperial Guard. Inquiries among Canadian and Australian soldiers indicate that many are willing to join provided the periods of service are short. It is generally agreed that the scheme presents difficulties in the way of organisation. Sir Thomas Mackenzie, New Zealand High Commissioner, agreed as to the good effect of the formation of the unit from an Imperial point of view, but said it might not be approved by New Zealand, which discouraged the military spirit except for defensive purposes, and possibly it would not he a welcome proposal to send New Zealand’s sons twelve thousand miles for a prolonged period of service.
