GENERAL RUSSELL'S RECEPTION
A MEETING OF CITY COUNCILLORS. Yesterday afternoon the correspondence that has passed between the Mayor of the city and the Acting-i*rimo Minister in regard to the reception to Major-General Sir A. H. Russell was discussed at an inlormal meeting ol city councillors. The Press representatives were not admitted, and the town clerk afterwards announced: "The view taken by the councillors waa thai whilst the Mayor had been somewhat slighted, probably unintentionally, in the matter, he should overlook the slight in deference to MajorGeneral Russell. The Mayor said ho would bow to the wishes of the councillors, and at their special request he intimated that he would be present at the Government reception in the Town Hall." The Labour members of-"the wuncil refrained from attending the meeting.
