e MEETING OF BUKOUGH COUNCIL
A meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last evening. Tnose present were: —The Mayor (Mr J. W. McEwan) and Councillors D; S. Bedingfield. C. P. Brooklebank. J. L. Churchouse. G. Cook/W. Cox, W. Hay, J. Kyle, A. Anderson, and J. E. Tovej. The borough inspector (.Air W. B. Gough) was instructed to attend the Town Planning Conference when sanitary matter were being dealt with. It was also decided to ask the borough engineer (Mr A. Oowie) to attend throughout the conference.
The Acting-Prime Minister intimated that the council's representations regarding the Government taking stops to secure a State owned mercantile fleet would he given serious consideration. A communication was received -rom the Labour Department asking if the council was prepared to accept payment of hack rates in respect to two Government properties at Is and 6d per week respectively It was pointed out hy Councillor Anderson that „the persons who wore in the houses were in poor oircnmstatnce®. Further inquiries are to be made. A deputation, representing the Municipal Band, asked that the council take the band over and run it. ‘lie n embers were reported to be enthusiastic enough, but they could not ■do justice to themselves oh account of their poor financial condition. The instruments were in a disgraceful condition and players refused to play them.—lt was decided to pav the band a subsidy of £25. The Question of the. council taking the hand over was deferred for a week. ~ „ A deputation from the iTugoy Fonhall League asked that a • nrncile bo allotted to them at the mam entrance to the recreation ground. At present tho followers of the league game contributed to the Rugby funds.—Councillors expressed surprise at this and eaid it was not fair. The council, it was stated, received 60 per cent, of the takings and the Rugby Union 40 per cent. The Mayor said that an arrangement had been made with the Rugby Union and the same conditions hod applied in the past. It was decided to ask the Rugby Union if it was nrepared to allow the League to make use of one of the turnTha borough engineer, reported that efforts hod been made to procure a suitable stone a n.arry for street metal, but without success. For some time, lie consumers of aas in Regent and bvdnoy streets had suffered through a want ol pressure: on occasions residents cere unable to get gas at nil. On an examination of the mams being made it was found that there was a break and water had cot in. , . . The borough inspector reported having made 67 inspections during the month. Several defects were dealt with. the District Health Officer had reported on a number of premises that reouired repairs. The annual licenses collected for the month amounted to -220. Information was received, from the Acting-Minister for Labour in regard to rnnresrntotioTis made hv the Mayor wnn Mr H. Findlay, who waited upon the council respecting th" erect’-’" of , workers’ dwellings at Petone. that it was hoped to have some definite information to submit in tho course of a few weeks. Tn the meantime anv workers in Rotone who desired to have workers’ dwellings erected should make eariv application to tho officer in charge of the V cllington branch of the department. .
