'OHRISTOHUROH, May lfct A deputation from the Returned Soldiers' Association, the .Lady Liverpool Fund and other bodies waited on the Hon. G. W. Russell, this morning to press "a claim that the sum of £3OOO voted by the Lady Liverpool Fund Committee to the Soldiers' Club building fund should be validated by the Minister.

Introducing the'. deputation,.. the, Mayor said that the Minister was asked to find a way out of the '.'red tape" that prevented the paying over of the grant. The deputation asked that immediate sanction be given to the transfer, and, if necessary, statutory authority be given later for the transfer.

A number of other prominent citizens spoke in favour of the transfer being authorised.- ' .-■ ■ ■■"'■' R-eplying, the Minister said thai the strongest point raised was that the club would provide accommodation for medically unfit men who wanted something in tho nature of a home, but the legal position had to be observed. The matter was one for Parliament to settle. He would consult the Government, as to whether • amending legislation should be brought down to provide that such funds might be used not only for establishing clubs, but also for maintaining them.
