HOROWHENUA NOTES

From Our Own Correspondent. OTAKI, May 9.

The annual peneral meeting of the Otaki Hockey Club was held last night, when the following officers were elected : —Patron, Mr Byron Brown;' president, Mr H. Witehell; vice-presidents, Messrs Hodgson, Bax, Ling, Satherley, and Kirk; captain, K. Satherley; vice-captain, U. Batten; management committee, J. Ay re, B. Batten, \V. Fairley; secretary, treasurer, and delegate to union, A. Adset. The opening of the Otaki (Jymnasuvm Club took place on Wednesday night,. and was largely attended. The seas6h promises to be a successful one. The installation of Mr D. W. Mathe,6oii, as Mayor of Levin, took place on Wednesday, the'ceremony being perrormed by the outgoing Mayor. A scheme for the dental treatment of school children is being submitted to the various State schools in this district by Mr D. S. Mackenzie, the principal point being that presevation of the te"th in the child by proper care was better than any kind of treatment applied too late. . ' :

The question of hot drinks for school children during the winter months is to be tfivon a trial at Otaki, but the Levin committee has deferred the matter, peoding further inquiries. Nurse, te Au, well-known in, this district as a leading vocalist, has decided to tour America with the Chautauqua party that recentlv visited New Zealaud. Mr A. McDougall, who has resigned as manager of the To Horo Co-operative Dairy Co., has decided to start in lusiness as commission agent, etc., on -t-is own account.

A farm sold at Te Horo this week re-. alised the very satisfactory price of «' £3 per acre (128 acres). Another farm in the same district realised nearly .£7O. Mr and Mrs H. G. Bryant, of Mauakau, left yesterday on a tour of the North Island. The annual meeting of the Otaki Girls' Gymnasium Club was held last night, when the report showed the club to be in a flourishing condition. 'lhe election of officers was deferred for a week. The Eev. G. W. Slade, new Methodist minister at Otaki, received a hearty welcome last night ,when he was accorded a social.
