Tile monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council was held at Levin on Saturday. There were present: Councillors G. A. Monck (chairman), F. J. Ryder, J. R. Whyto, W. J. Bryant, G. P. Catley, S. A. Broadbelt, C. J. Harkness, and J. JVlcLeavey. The Palmerston North Hospital Board -\vroto suggesting a "clean-up" week in the country, and asking that in case of a fresh outbreak of influenza the board's representatives be allowed to secure necessary equipment. The Palmorston North Chamber of Commerce asked ftfr support in a resolution urging the Government to take over all main arterial roads.—To be supported. The Boston Chamber of Commerce asked for co-operation in preventing sand-drifts between Wanganui and Paekakariki, to which the council agreed. The Wellington Central Chamber of Commerce -wrote suggesting a conference of local bodies, to be held next month, to consider hydro-electric development, improvement of Paekakariki and llimutaka roads and railway inclines, closer settlement of rural districts, village settlement on townplanning lines, forestry, and motor tax.—The chairman and Councillor Ryder were- appointed to attend the conference:
Mr Alfred Newman (Wellington) offered £25 to provide a flood-gate in the drain running to tho Manaivatu liver.
The Mount Hector track committeewroto making further application for a grant to improve the tourist track over the Tararuas. —A grant of £lO was made.
It was decided to write off £236 in overdue rates, viz., general £'2oo, separate £2, special i. 28. The engineer roportcd as follows: Xe Horo Hiding-—lt is in this end of the county that all the works are being done this month. The asphalting of the Otaki bridge is done as far as possible until the widening of tho centre has been effected. Another shipment of the timber came to hand dnring the month, and the balance is expected next week. Tho metalling at To Horo ia getting on slowly. I got the roads leading to Pukenamu (tho soldiers' settlement) put in good order; also the road to tho beach. I havo also got the 'i'e Horo beach road down to Mr Harkness's gate metalled with broken metal- The men are now engaged scarifying and metalling between tho Te Horo station and tho top of the hill on tho south side of Gillies' woolshed. Otaki Riding.—There is still nothing doing in the riding but the Main road widening near Mr G. Bcvan's and cutting down tho trees round the Manakau cemetery. JL propose to finish the rond in about a week. I will then get the pipe culverts laid on the Waitohou flat. I havo been unable to get suitable fencing materials for the grnvol-pit at Waitohou.
