RETURNING TROOPS
NORTHUMBERLAND IN PORT.
The big liner Northumberland arrived in the stream at Wellington at 4 p.m. yesterday, from Liverpool, via Newport Nows (U.S.A.) .and Panama Oanal, with returning draft of troops No. 243 on board. Tho soldiers number 1330. The Port Health Officer inspected tho ship Inst evening, and found five cases of mumps among the soldiers and eight cases of typhoid fover. Six of the latter nro members of the crow. An outbreak of mumps is quite a common affair among returning troops, and tho cases on the Northumberland are mild. Tho typhoid broke out about two weeks after leaving Newport News, and is attributed to vegetables that were procured at the American port. The health of all tho others on board is excellent and no deaths occurred on tho voyage. The Northumberland will bo boarded by tho Customs officials at 6.30 o’clock this morning, and the liner will berth at the King’s wharf at 7 a.m. The military patients will bo removed to tho Trontham Hospital, and tho sick members of the crew will be transferred to the Wellington Hospital. There are no nurses or female passengers on the vessel. A good trip was experienced until nearing Now Zealand, when rough weather was encountered, followed by misty conditima, which delayed the ship’s arrival. Tho Northumberland is to proceed jn to Melbourne and Sydney on Wednesday.
