Air James Crompton, an old New Zealand settler, died a few days ago. lie was born in Victoria; came.to New Zealand in 1871, and spent two years in the;-South island, afterwards coming north, where, for some time, he wm engaged-in railway contracting work on the Wanganui, New P'.ymouAi, Bimuukn. and Manawatu lines. Liter on he \vas in .business at Olaki and Ohau, 'after wards going to the Pa tea district, whore, for the past eleven years; he has been engaged in farming pursuits.
The death occurred at Mount Eden on, Tuesday of Airs P. Lindsay; who had’-been a resident of' Auckland tof over thirty years past. Mrs Lindsay, as a-girl of seven years of age, arrived at Dunedin from Scotland with her parents. Air and Airs John \Hill, in the ship Eliindell. in September, 1848, t.ho year of the foundation of the Otago settlement. Airs Lindsay leaves tws sons.. Dr P. A. Lindsay, of Auckland, and .Air J. H. Another, of Auckland’s old identities, Mrs O’Neill, passed away on Monday last at Grey Lynn. Deceased had attained the age of 100 yeifs, and up till - about three mouths a'go was extraordinarily active. She retained her faculties almost to her death, ,I'ho deceased • Indy was - born in Limerick, Ireland, in 1819, and in 1844 she.»rid her hugband, who predeceased "her by some years,, migrated to South "Africa. Subsequently she resided in Australia for sumo, time, but in the ’seventfos'sho settled in Auckland, where she remained until her death: :Alrs O’Neill ;is survived by one son and-one daughter. ■
Lieutenant Ridley Whitcfield, of 'the Rifle- Brigade, fifth' son of Mr John Whitcfield, .formerly;- of Kokianca, and non- of Tvingsland, ’has been 'awarded tho Military Cross. The official gazette .notice states that the decoration was awarded for conspicuous gallantry ; n leading a bombing attack to drive the; enemy from high ground. With groat determination he rushed forward with'his party, shot throe of the- enemy, and captured tho post with' two machine : gtins 'and two minenwerfers. When tho enemy counter-attacked be drove them back with great coolness and skill. ‘Lieutenant Whitefield left New Zealand .in February, .1915.
