The 'Manawatu Racing Club opened its uitiimn meeting to-day under excellent conditions. The train.service from Wellington was not' anything like what it should have been, and the service from the course to Palmerston North was not i>y "any ' means perfect. Tile racing throughout the day was quite good. There was a verv good finish, for the Hurdles ■ Vagabond was cleveriy ridden oy H. Gray in the Autumn Handicap, xnd he came along at the right time to an'a comfortable race. Sweet Com .an a good race, and so did Marqueteur. The race for the Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes was a very good one. Lxiine «et the pace, and a merry.one too, out T stopped badly at the latter end. Master Lupin, and Sleight of Hand improved their positions, and when the straight was reached th« latter was in front and had a slight lead over- the last hurdle. At the stewards' stand Sir Fisher dashed up alongside of him but had no chance of heading. In the race to the post the National winner Wd his own and won bv a (food length. Vagabond carried nearly twice as much as the second favourite in the Autumn Handicap for which there were thirteen runners. Battle Song had the dnsido running, but soon lost his place. Vagabond, on the outside, was in front of Tressida and Sweet Corn as they passed the stand. Sweet Corn was in front of Marqueteur and Bagdad at the back, with Vagabond and Nobleman close up. Bagdad led Fabriquette into tho straight, with Sweet Corn, Marqueteur. Tressida, and Vagabond bunched behind them. Qra> then took the favourite out, and rapidly overhauled the leaders, going on to win nicely by a length. Marqueteur and Tressida were close together. Bagdad beinjr fourth; then came Sweet Corji and Nobleman. Time, lmin 52 2-sscc.

The scratching pen worked overtime in the Awapuni Gold Cup, only three startin? out of an acceptance of ten. Sasanof carried twice a-S much as Desert Gold, and Bonnie . Maid . was ignored. Sasanof and Bonnie Maid ran together for the greater part of the journey; Deser*- Gold being three lengths behind them. • Turning into the straight Emerson took Deam-t Gold along, and she rapidly reduced the • gap. As they nassod' the stand Desert Gold was rapidly gaining on Sasanof. and there appeared to be a chance of her overhauling the favouvito'. but he stuck it out to the finish and beat'her by three-quarters of n length.
