Captain Ebcn. J. Thomas has resigned the office of president of the Auckland branch of the Navy League owing to the state of his health. During the three years Captain Thomas has been president the membership has increased from about 36, to 1200.. During the same period the _ branch has been instrumental in raising nearly i 30,000 for the purpose of aiding widows ana families ol killed and'disabled men of the British Navy.

The great advance made in recent years in mechanical devices for bookkeeping and statistical work was shown' last evening at a meeting of the Wellington Accountant Students' Society, when Mr'.lß. T. Goodwin gave -a demonstration of the working of an adding and subtracting typewriter. Ho gave examples of uses' to which the machine can be put in counting-house work..-A hearty vote of 'thanks was accorded" Mr Goodwin at the conclusion of the demonstration^

The annual conference^;of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association, to be held this year in 'Christchurch, commencing on May 26th, will he of particular' interest to both returned soldiers and the public generally, as upon the decision of the gathering tlio whole policy of the association depends. The local association will be represented by five delegates, and a special meeting has been convened for May loth, at the Concert Chamber, to elect the delegates and discuss the -remits forwarded by various associations. G. B. Mitchell, D.S.O. (invercargiil), who is returning to New Zealand &• O.C. troops on board the transport Northumberland, duo ai Wellington to-morrow, has , rendered splendid servi.ee to .New Zealand. He took part in the South African campaign, enlisting in the First New , Zealand Contingent, serving throughout the Boer War as trooper and sergeant.
