PUBLIC SPECULATION WHEN WifcL PARLIAMENT MEET? Not very long ago ilie opinion that Parliament might not meet this.' year gained currency, but it was quickly discounted. However, in the public mind, uncertainty as to' the" date -when--the House will again open 'is prevalent: The' general, idea is that the meeting will be late and the session short, and this view is strengthened by the-fact that Mr Massev and Sir Joseph Ward are not likely to bo in New Zealand before the end of July or, the middle of, August. However, Parliament must meet on or before August 31st or the long list of important enactments —some of them essential to carrying on the government—named in the Expiring Laws Continuance Act, 1918, will cease to be in force. Section 2 of that Act in a reference-to. these .enactments says they "shall continue in force until the 31s't day of August, 1919, and shall then expire if not further continued."
