THE NEW WAITEMATA. A Press Association message from Dunedin states that the new standardised steamer Waitemata, built by the Imperial Government, and purchased by the Onion Company while on the stocks, will leave England this month for Caloutta. via Port Said. From Calcutta she will sail for the four main New Zealand ports, via Singapore and Samarang. The waitemata is one of five steamers purchased by the Un'ion Company. She is an oil fuel vessel launched by the Northumberland Shipbuilding Company, Ltd., Howdon-on-Tvne, in February last. Throe other vessels are to bo built at the yard for the Union Company. Her dimensions are:—Length, 400 ft; breadth, 53ft; depth, 35ft. She will have a carrying capacity of 9000 tons dead weight. She is fitted with triple-expansion engines', and will be propelled by oil fuel, with a spoed of 12 knots. MANUKA FIREMAN DIEB. Karl Larson, a fireman on the quarantined steamer Manuka, died at the quarantine station on Somes Island early yestorday morning from influenza. Deceased, wio was thirty-throe years of age, joined the vessel in Australia. He was one of the first cases on the Manuka- Four engineers and firemen of the vessel's crow acted as pall-bearers, carrying the coffin from the island mortuary to the graveyard on the island, where tho interment took place yesterday afternoon. The Rev. Mr Hales officiated at the graveside. THE KAIAPOI. . Tho Union Go. advises that the Kaiapoi is due at Wellington on Sunday next from Melbourne via southern ports. There are twenty-two returned New Zealand Tiunition workers on the ship Uookot' for Wellington. DUNBDIN S NEW BOILER. No definite decision has yet been arrived at by the Otago Harbour Board in regard to the purchase of a new boiler for tho tug Dunedin. The only tender received in the stipulated time was for .£5521 for one boiler (.£9099 if installed). It be mentioned (says the "Otago Daily Times") that the sum of JJ4OOO was named in the estimates of tho board as the probable cost of a new boiler. A second tender was sent bv cablegram from England, but was not received in the stipulated time. A communication was also received from an American firm offering to quote if the board was prepared to consider its offer and to supply the necessary details. The matter is now being further considered.

DANGEROUS WRECKAGE, The following message, telling of dangerous wreckage floating off the northwest coast of Tasmania, was received the Customs Department at Melbourne on April 22nd:—"Master of the Wild Wave arrived here.from Adelaide and reports that on April sth. at 1 o'clock. }n latitude 42deg. 3 south, longitude 138 deg. _47 east, ho sighted floating wreckage with heavy seas breaking over it. As the night was dark, and a gale of wind was blowing, it was impossible to make out what it was. but he considers that it was a deep draft derelict apparently longer than the Wild Wave." The Wild Wave is a barque of 223 tons net register and 119 feet in length. -.KAIKOURA FOR LONDON. The New Zealand Shipping Co. advlaes that the Kaikoura is due back at Wellington on Monday from Tokomaru Bayto complete her Homeward loading. The vessel is to leave here on the 16th inst. for London via Panama. MANUKA BBRTHS TO-NTGHT. The Manuka, which has been under quarantine in the stream at Wellington, has had no fresh cases of influenza ch board since Saturday, and if no other cases develop to-day" she; will berth this evening at No. 4, Queen's wharf, to discharge her cargo from "Sydney, amounting to 1D52 tons. The Manuka is expected to leave Wellington on Saturday for Sydney. NORTHUMBERLAND DUB TOMORROW. A wireless message received yesterday from the steamer Northumberland, on route from Liverpool, reports that the vessel-will arrive at Wellington at midday to-morrow. The vessel has a returning draft of troops on board. WHAKATANE* ARRIVES TOMORROW. The Whakatane, en route from New York, left Auckland at 6 o'clock yestorday morning for Wellington, where she Is due early to-morrow afternoon. The vessel will berth at the Taranaki streetwharf to put out part cargo, and will sail about next Wednesday for Lytteltjn and Dunedin to complete disoharge. The Whakatane will eubsequently load in New Zealand for London. THB WATERSIDB BALLOT. There w,-«-e 39 informal votes in the ballot recently held by the New Zealand Waterside Workers' Federation on the question of the acceptance or rejection of the employers' offer of twopence per hour increase of wages. This makes a total of 3914 votes cast. The figures given in Monday's "New Zealand Times"—2l67 voles against acceptance, and 1706 for—remain unchanged. Eighteen waterside unions took part in the ballot, KIA ORA FOR LYTTEfLTON. H. §oales, Ltd., advises that tho baxquo R-aupo sailed from San Francisco on Saturday last with a load of case oil for Napier. Tho Scales barquentine Ysabel, which arrived at Melbourne from Auokilajad, sailed yesterday with general cargo for Auckland. The Woales barque Rona commenced loading coal at Newcastle yesterday for Wellington. The Scales schooner Rna, whioh left Auckland for Tonga on April 2b'th, and put buck to port tho following day owing to tho master. Captain Champion, being too ill to continue tho voyage, sailed a,gain for Ilaapui on Saturday evening with Captain La.no in charge. The vessol will load copra for Auckland. THE SYDNEY BOAT. The Union Company's Moeraki, now at Sydney, has been put on a special run from Sydnov to Fiji, leaving tnere on May Bth with passengers for the outgoing Makura. Tho Island steamer Atua will meantime take up the Moerukl's running, and was to leave for Wellington yesterday. REMUERA AT AUCKLAND. Tho Now Zealand Shipping Company's liner Remuera arrived at Auokland from Plymouth on Monday morning and dropped anchor in the etroam shortly after six. She was granted pratique, and berthod at tho Quoon's wharf before ton. Tho Bomuera is discharging HiiO tons of general cargo, and will sail for Wellington to-morrow. T'ho voyage from Plymouth occupied 47 days, the English port being left on March 19th. Tho first portion, botwetui Plymouth and Newport Newss, proved highly exciting, the vessel experiencing very heavy weather in tho Atlantic a few dajrs out. It was necessary to hove to for 36 hours, and on anxious tima wiis ondured for several days The only material damage was tho loss of a forward boat and davita snapping, and the frail craft being oarried overboard.
