The steamer Makura, which arrived from Vancouver to-day, brought back twenty-four lieutenants, all of. the Koyal Navy'or Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. They were all participant* in the naval operations about th"o North Sea, taking part in, submarine chasing and general patrol work, while most of them had a hand in the bom- * bardments of the Belgian coast. • Lieutenant-Commander Lionel Robinson, R.N., is on his way to Melbourne to take up a naval appointment there. When in charge of an armoured train in the north of Franco early m the war this officer did such daoiago to the Germans thati the Kaiser offered- £lCHW^or ß &s, h.e,adj. He was also with one-of the naval brigades .in Antwerp, and took part in the Heligoland fight and the storming of Zeebrugge, and lati-erly was engaged in shelling the Belgian coast. Besides possessing fhV Distinguished Service Cross he received a. decoration from the Belgian King. , , - Great tales are told of the deeds of thirty-eight chief petty officers, who are part of a force of motor-boat, patrolmen to come back. .They are. - all In Auckland now, and everyone of them has seen service, bombing the Belgian coast, working against mines, snd in mystery ships chasing submarines.
