Lieutenant F. Maynard, who left with the 10th Reinforcement, and saw considerable service on the Western front', being wounded during one engagement, has returned to Napier.
The gentlemen holding the commission of the peace in Hastings have presented Mr T. ,M. Lawlor, late clerk of the court, with an easy chair, as a mark of their esteem, on his retirement from the. Public Service, after forty years of capable worn.
Mr W. J. Lankshear will bo leaving for England shortly, arid will be absent for over a year. Ho has tendered bis resignation as deacon of the Terrace Congregational Church. Tho church, in accepting Mr Laukshear’s resignation; has' expressed its high appreciation of his thirteen years of faithful and valuable service.
A . cable message from London announces tho death of the Rev. William Spotswood Greene, C. 8., M.A., m hi* seventy-second year. Deceased was the first to make tho ascent of Blount Cook (N.Z.). His publications include “The High Alps of New Zealand,” and “The Selkirk Glaciers.”
The following members of the military police at Trenthani Camp have been promoted :—Priyates H. B. Hobbies and P. BlacKonjde. to be -Sergeants; Lance-Corporals C. E. Guildford and R. Boyce and Privates W. G. Aitken and E. F. Buckle to bo Corporals; Privates F. V. Sharon, A. Taylor, and F. E. i/co to be Lance-Corporals.
The death occurred at Napier last week of Blr Vernon Smith, a former well-known Dannevirke resident. Deceased was connected for a number of years with the Wairarapa district, and he subsequently commenced business in Dannevirke as a laud agent. He removed to Napier a few years ago for the benefit of his health.
Another pioneer settler of the Wairarapa, Mr James Stone, passed away on Saturday morning. Tho deceased, who was eighty-four years of age, went to Aiasterton over forty years ago, and established The Waipoua Nurseries, lie later resided with his son on a farm in the Pdngaroa district. He loaves two soils and one daughter.
The funeral took place yesterday afternoon of the late Air Wifliam Russell, ■lief engineer of the steamer Bhamo, who suddenly on Sunday morning The ship’s officers, engineers, and representatives of each department of the vessel attended tho intermentwhich was at the Karori. Cemetery. Alissioner Aloore officiated at tilie graveside.
Air George AVallace, a much-r,stoe:ned member of the AVellington Waterside Workers’ Union executive and assist ant secretary of the Waterside Baudj died at the hospital on Sunday night from typhoid. Deceased had been in charge of one of the gangs occupied in fumigating shipping. He was about >lO years of age and unmarried, Thi funeral will start from Alorris’s mortuary chapel at 3 p.m. to-day.

Reed Glasson Ibis year attained his semi-jubilee as pastor of the Terrace Congregational Churchhaving been called to the pastorate on April l 4th, 1894, though he did not commence his ministry until August oLtbat year. Mr W. J. Phillips, of Sanson, who is well-known as the owner of the races horse Nobleman, a member of th» Bulls and Districts Patriotic Society, and n member of the Manawatu County Council, . has disposed of his farm near Sanson to Mr D. Henderson, of Fern Flats, Marton. Mr Phillips has resided in Sanson for most of his life. It is understood that he will live in Palmerston North.’
