LOOKING AFTER THE SAILORS

The British and Foreign Sailors’ Society held a social evening on Saturday for the seamen in port. How much these “socials” are appreciated by the seamen may he gauged by the large number that attend. It* has been found lately that tho present rooms of the society are too small to accommodate all the seamen who come along, and the society has had frequently to hire a hall for these occasions. The arrangements for Saturday were in tho liands of Misses J. Tcoboon and L. Makeham, who, with a number of willing helpers, ensured tho evening’s success; .After an interesting programme of games, recitations, singing, etc., had been gone through, light supper was served. Before c.osing a hearty vote of thanks and cheers were accorded to the Indies by the seamen for providing such an enjoyable time. Tho singing of “Awld Lang Syne” terminated the evening’s entertainment. The usual sailors’ Sunday tea and gospel service was attended hy a large number of men at the society’s rooms, Post Office square.
