Most of the two-ycar-olds engaged at the forthcoming meeting were spurted over two, three, and four furlongs. They ail movqd along in approved style, the most striking performances being put up by Bo Peon and Cherry Mart. PROSPECTS FOR, SATURDAY. The first race on the card is the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, of two miles and a half. Of the ten engaged the besfcJooker is Coalition (11), who has continued to improve with every appearance on the track. Kurapai, the top weight, has not to beat much to gat into a place, and another horse with prospects is Black Heart (10.8). The largo field of twenty-one is set down to contest tho Eimntaba Handicap, of seven furlongs. Johnny Walker (8.10) has been going well on. the tracks, and ho should put up a good showing in the race. Arrowfield, who has been in the limelight lately, must run well, and: another possible placegetter is Polynesian, who carries 8.4. The Taita Handicap, of four furlongs, for two-year-olds, will keep tho punters busy. There are twenty-two engaged, and several of them have fair credentials. Demosthenes has two representatives in the race, and he may shine in the final decision. .If Bonville gets away she will keep the others busy. Karo (Demosthenes—Kautuku) is credited with doing something wonderful on the quiet, and developments will be awaited, with interest. The major event of the day, the Wellington Handicap, has a field of twentyone. Practically all of tho acceptors are well-performed horses, and even if there are several 'withdrawals there will still be a good field left. The popular fancy in well-informed quarters is tho Demosthenes gelding Silver Tongue, but he will have to go some to beat such horses as Menolaus, Adjutant, Teka, Red Ribbon, Orleans, and others. On paper Orleans must have a big say in the decision of the race; in fact, he and Menelaus would appear to bo the best fitted to fight out the finish, providing they race on tho top of tho ground. Chortle’s sister. Chuckle, should, not bo amongst the outsiders on tho machine. The biggest field of the day is engaged in the October Handicap, no less than thirty-two appearing on the card. There are some very classy horses engaged. Noir has performed creditably so far, and Rajput and Acre are well worthy of consideration. Nineteen are engaged in the Wainui Handicap, of a mile. The New Zealand Cup candidate Hendra has a stone under the top weight, and as the race carries no penalty for tho major event he may run along to some purpose. Probation has been doing good work on the tracks and will probably make a showing. Mascot is another. who is well used to the local tracks. The Shorts Handicap, of six furlongs, has tho unlucky number of thirteen acceptors, and it will be an unlucky race for many punters, the field being a very solid one. Miss Do Val (8.4) should make a bravo showing, and. Elocution (8.5), who has been well supported with Silver Tongue for the double, must be considered. The rest can bo picked out of the hat.
