FATAL MOTOR ACCIDENT
TWO LIVES LOST. SETTLER’S MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. As the result of a motor accident at tho Kahumingi bridge, on tho Master-ton-Tenui road on Wednesday, Mr James O’Connor, an old settler of Tinui, and his daughter, aged about 16 years, lost their Uvea. It appears that Mr Gordon Laing, of R-iversaale, accompanied by Mr and Miss O’Connor, left Mastertou in the former’s car for home shortly after 8 o’clock. After twelve miles had been covered ; and when approaching the Kahumingi bridge, something went wrong, and the car crashed over the side of the bridge, falling a distance of about 20ft into the river. The occupants were pinned underneath, but Mr Laing managed to free himself. Mr W. Taylor, of Beaumaris,, who was following in his car, immediately went to Mr Vallance’s homestead for assistance. Mr C. F. Vallance and a number of his men were speedily on the spot, but it took them half an hour to liberate Mr and Miss O’Connor, who appeared to be dead. A message was sent to the police in Masterton, and two constables went out with Dr Cowio. Tho latter, on his arrival, could only pronounce life to be extinct. There were abrasions upon both bodies .but it would appear that Mr O’Connor and his daughter were drowned. Tbe bodies were removed to the house of Mr Vallance, where an inquest was held yesterday by Mr E. G. Eton, district coroner, when evidence was given bearing out tho facts as stated above.
