Owing to good management and the active assistance of the- Japapese Government in the shape of subsidies, etc., the Nippon Yusen Kaisha has been able, after only 27 years’ working, to accumulate reserves amounting to nearly six million sterling: whereas the P. and O. Company, after an existence of ,76 years, have only been able to set aside reserves of A 11,950,000. which has been none in spite of Government hostility to shipowners. The Nippon Yusen Kaisha’s position is an exceptionally strong one. With a capital of £2,750.000, and reserves of £5,86f,947, it has a fleet of 459,260 tons, which stands in the books at only £7 Ts per ton gross, and cash and public loans of no less than £3.527,192, which places tho company an a position to euooessfully cpmpeto -with British and other shipowners in any direction after tho war, and to capture any trades during the war. The market as compared with tho book value of tho company’s fleet, at the present time, can be gauged from the fact that quite recently they paid £SO per ton gross for an ordinary Japanese cargo steamer; oven assuming that the fleet as a whole was only valued at .650 ur-r ton gross at aqi mm uoys Pjhoav -u- ’ourpt ivasora eqi steamer* wore worth seven times their bcok value, ar,J that on a winding-up the shareholders would re-c-ive over ,61000 for every £IOO subscribed, whereas the present market vahi" on the Tokio Stock Exchange is about ,£760.
