“What steps are being taken to remedy the wrong done to a number of lads by gazetting them as deserters by mistake?” asked Mr T. W. Rhodes, M.P. for Thames, in Parliament on Tuesday. One lad. named Donald Dalgety, of the Hauraki Plains, said the hon. member, went into camp in January Last, and was gazetted as a deserter in February, and when ho was being farewelled by his friends recently on returning from his final leave, a constable appeared armed with a warrant to arrest him. Fortunately the constable had a little common sense, and, seeing him being farewelled, did not arrest him. Sir James Alien (Minister for Defence) replied that, unfortunately, mistakes could not bo always avoided; but when a mistake was made the correction of the error was gazetted as soon as possible.
