VARIOUS POLICE CASES. A first offending drunk who had been, under medical treatment for a week was fined 20s yesterday by the presiding magistrate, Air S. E. McCarthy, S.M. The defendant was also ordered to pay 17s fkl medical expenses. John Hyde, a prohibited person, was fined £5 for committing a breach of bw prohibition order, in default to go to gaol for ono month. FAILED TO ENLIST. Clarence Percival Matthew Hall, who was before the court on Tuesday on a charge of giving false answers questions put to him by a constable as to big registration in the Now Zealand Expeditionary Force, came up for sentence. Senior-Sergeant Emerson informed the Bench that Hall had gone up to the Buckle street barracks with a constable for the purpose of enlisting, but was unable to do so as the system of voluntary enlistment had closed m June last. The Defence authorities, however, had offered to send the defendant to camp at once. The defendant was convicted and ordered to be banded over to the military authorities. ASSAULTED A CHINESE. Frank Robert Wilson, a young man, pleaded guilty to assaulting a Chinese named Ah Leone. Tho police evidence was to the effect that Wilson went to Ah Leong’s shop about 8 o’clock on Tuesday momingHo asked for two cigarettes for a penny. The Chinese refused to seu less than a packet of cigarettes, for which be asked sevenponce. The accused, who had sevenponce in his possession, stated that he wanted to keep fivoponc© for b©er. Upon Chinese still refusing Wilson s request, the latter struck the storekeeper three blows on the head with a walkingstick. A scuffle ensued, during wluoh the Chinese managed to wrench too stick away. The matter was reported to the police. Constable Barnes interviewed the defendant, who denie all knowledge of the occurrence. The accused, who had a number of previous convictions against him, was sent to prison for two months.
