LAWN TENNIS

A special meeting of the Council of the. Wellington Lawn Tennis Association was held last evening. Mr G. A. Hurlev presided, and there were also present Messrs A. B. S danders (Masterton), Vf. M. Eggles-tone. (Wellington), W. J. Melody (Lower Hutt), C. Bowen (Newtown). W- Bray (Newltown). M. Kean (Greytown), 14. Salmond (Thorndon), S. Roberts (Brougham Hill), M. P. Xnstono (Brougham HUD. and L. H. Arcus (Lyall On the motion of Mr W. J. Melody it was decided to amend the rules to provide that the officers of the association shall consist of a president, teen vicepresidents, an honorary secretary, an honorary match secretary, and an honorary treasurer. Xu tho past the election of vice-presidents was unlimited. Mr G. A. Hurley moved: “That the annual subscription payable by affiliation clubs to this association be not charged nor recoverable during the period of the war.’ 1 Mr Hurley said that everything that could ba done to help win the war should be done, and the passing of tho motion would he a step in the right direction. Mr Sclandexs said be was in favour of the motion. The Mastorton Club had been hit hard through the members going -to the front. There was not an eligible man remaining in the club. Consequently the finances were at a lowebb. The association would have no difficulty in carrying on for a year or two even at a loss cf =£4o or ASO per annum. ~ , , Mr Salmoud and other delegates disagreed with the motion on the ground that the association- should be kept alive in the interests of the game and players when they returned from the war. itr Ivean said that tho strain was being felt particularly bv tho country clubs, but the Wellington Clubs wore in a better financial condition. The motion was lost by ten votes to four. On a motion by Mr isalmond it was resolved to reduce the capitation fc«s of members of city clubs from 2s 6d to Is fid during the period of the war.
