PARLIAMENT
YESTERDAY’S SITTING LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL DISCHARGED SOLDIERS’ SETTLEMENT BILL. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 P.m., the Acting Speaker (the Hon. W. C. F. Carncross) in the chair. The Discharged Settlement Amendment Bill was introduced from tho Homo of Representatives and was briefly outlined by Sir Francis “ell. He said that the second reading could be taken that aay and the committee stage the following day. Tho Hon. R. Moore said the Bill before the. Council was going in tho riga;c direction for Helping soldiers on .no rind. All of course would depend on its administration. The Hon. J. T. Paul said he would have liked longer lime to consider tho Bill. in should at least have been, referred to a Committee of tho Council.. Tho Government should endeavour to secure the very bent land for tho soldiers. Tho ,Hon. A. T. Maginnity, the Hon. Major Harris, and the Hon. G. Oarson also expressed their whole-hearted support of the Bill. In reply Sir Francis Bell said that the cost of land situated near the railways was so high that the Government could not very well purchase it for soldiers. Surely the physique of the soldiers would not have so iar deteriorated that they could not take up land in the baekblocks. Tho Bill was read a second time and at 3.15 p.m. the Council adjourned until 2.30 p.m. to-day. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES WAR PURPOSES LOAN BILL, NO. 2. ADDITIONAL AUTHORITY TO BORROW .£4,000,000. The House of Representatives mot at 2.30 p.m., the Speaker (Sir F. W. Lang) in the chair. Preliminary business and the discussion on tho Second Division allowances art reported elsewhere. The War Purposes Loan Bill (No. 2) was introduced by Governor-General's Message, and read a first rime. The bill authorises additional authority to borrow an extra .£4,000,000 for war purposes and alter tho amount proposed to be , borrowed from .£24,000,000, specified'in No. 1 Bill, to £28,000,000.
